Hi, I’m Jake Riel — co-founder and CEO of Brick Popper, and a junior at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Brick Popper began with a problem I had as a kid.
I loved LEGO more than anything, but there was one thing that always frustrated me: the bricks would get stuck together. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t pull them apart.
When that happened, I’d run to my dad for help. He’d dig through the junk drawer and usually come back with a screwdriver. Sometimes it worked — but more often than not, it damaged the bricks. When he wasn’t around, I was left with broken fingernails and a few painful lessons that even sent me to the dentist.
When I was ten years old, I realized I couldn’t be the only kid dealing with this problem.
I went to my dad — a CU alumnus and entrepreneur — and asked if we could try to make something better. We spent countless hours in his office designing and 3D-printing different ideas. Most of them didn’t work, but we kept refining and testing until we finally got it right.
That tool became Brick Popper.
